The 21st February Paragraph
Every year on February 21, people all over the world celebrate International Mother Language Day. This special day honors all the native languages that people speak in different countries. It is called our ‘mother’ language because it is usually the first language we learn as children from our families.
International Mother Language Day was first started in Bangladesh. Long ago, the country was known as East Pakistan. In 1952, the government there said that everyone must learn Urdu. This made many people angry because most people spoke Bangla as their native language. On February 21 that year, some students protested for the right to speak Bangla. But the police attacked them and many students died. This sad event started the movement to recognize Bangla as an official language. Later Bangla became the national language of independent Bangladesh.
To remember the sacrifice of those students, Bangladesh declared February 21 as International Mother Language Day. In 1999, UNESCO, an organization that supports culture and education, also announced this date to honor all mother languages worldwide. Many activities are held on this day to promote native languages as essential to people’s cultural identities. It reminds governments to allow minority languages to be used in schools, media, and public places. International Mother Language Day teaches us that all languages, big or small, must be valued. International Mother Language Day on February 21st commemorates the Bengali Language Movement of 1952 in the former East Pakistan, now independent Bangladesh. When Pakistan declared Urdu the sole national language after the partition of India in 1947, students and activists in East Pakistan protested the move to impose Urdu at the expense of their native Bengali tongue. Tensions escalated on February 21st, 1952 when police fired upon and killed student demonstrators like Salam, Jabbar, Rafik and Barkat who were demanding official recognition of their mother language Bangla. This ultimate sacrifice transformed into a larger movement which culminated in Bangladesh gaining independence in 1971.
To honor these ‘Language Martyrs’, Shaheed Minar monuments were erected across East Pakistan, and February 21st was observed as Language Movement Day. After Bangladesh was liberated, this day was declared a national holiday, and the fallen activists were revered as heroes who ushered in independence. In 1999, UNESCO took note of this unique incident where people laid down their lives defending their right to speak their native language. It proclaimed February 21st as International Mother Language Day – a celebration of linguistic diversity globally. Today, over 188 countries observe this day to promote awareness of mother languages as crucial means of preserving cultural heritage.
In Bangladesh, it remains a solemn national day of mourning as people visit Shaheed Minar monuments, lay wreaths and sing mournful songs to salute the martyrs. The President and Prime Minister also give speeches recollecting the sacrifices of the activists. Special supplements are published in newspapers, television channels broadcast commemorative programs and prayers are held across the country. This annual remembrance serves as an inspiration to cherish our native tongues which often face the threat of extinction. International Mother Language Day reinforces why governments, communities and individuals must actively work to nurture their linguistic traditions. In our globalized world, while it is important to be multilingual, we must never forget the language that nurtures our roots.
